Delay-ing Paying for the War
June 11th, 2008 . by economistmomI really like Ruth Marcus’ column in today’s Washington Post. I think she must be a mom. She is appalled at the unwillingness of our politicians to fund the war in a fiscally-responsible manner, whether that shirking of duty to our children and grandchildren comes from actively pursuing fiscally-irresponsible policies, or passively wimping out on objecting to those fiscally-irresponsible policies. (I’ve sung that same tune over and over again here on this blog, of course.)
But what really struck and shocked me in Ruth’s column was the Tom Delay quote:
“Nothing is more important in the face of a war than cutting taxes,” then-House Majority Leader Tom DeLay declared in March 2003.
Wow. Did he really say that? I mean, I know they’ve been thinking that (or rather believing that) all along (you could do a “Mad Libs” type thing with that sentence and fill in the blank on “in the face of ____”), but to actually say that out loud?
